COHESION, CONNECTIONS: MOBILITY AT THE SERVICE OF TERRITORIES

Innovating for mobility means making it a support for regional development. Mobility connects, enables, equalizes. It is up to us to invent solutions to achieve local, national or global ambitions. Mobility also evolves with the times: it accompanies the emergence of new uses, new ways of living, of thinking about the relationship to space.

Transport infrastructures must be solutions, not constraints, to allow mobility to be considered as a service, integrating a maximum of possibilities and allowing a territory to develop and those who make it live to flourish there. It's a matter of utility. This is why we do not see innovation as a centralized vacuum but as a shared philosophy linked to our understanding of local specificities.

PROMOTING CIRCULAR ECONOMY SOLUTIONS

As one of the world's leading recyclers, Colas recovers and recycles, on its infrastructure sites and on its industrial sites, materials and waste resulting in particular from deconstruction. The Group thus offers its customers circular economy solutions, by developing recycling and recovery platforms as well as solutions for reusing materials. Colas thus contributes to the preservation of natural resources.

Valuing materials by relying on R&D

The circular economy is and always has been a central R&D theme for Colas. The work mainly concerns the recycling in place of road surfaces, the recycling of asphalt, the use of alternative materials such as organic residues, or research on additives and binders from industrial by- or co-products.

Develop valuation platforms and their uses

One of the main challenges of the circular economy is the territorial network to offer outlets for local recovery of waste and recycled materials to our customers. Colas relies in particular on the development of recovery platforms and multi-activity platforms (quarry, recycling, etc.).

Colas presents a new dynamic signaling solution for a ...

On the occasion of the Salon des Maires et des Collectivités Locales, which is being held in Paris from November 21 to 23, 2017, Colas is unveiling its latest road innovation, Flowell, a dynamic, scalable and modular signaling solution whose objective is to optimize urban space, traffic fluidity, safety and the coexistence of multiple forms of transport.

Developed by Colas R&D in collaboration with CEA Tech, the Flowell solution makes it possible to structure the shared space of roads and urban streets using a device based on the dynamic control of light signals. Installed on the existing road, Flowell offers great flexibility and adapts the roadway to the needs of local authorities in real time.

What are the uses of Flowell?

Flowell smooths traffic on existing traffic lanes by giving priority to certain users over specific periods of time. For example, local authorities can transform a delivery place during the day into a parking space at night, create ephemeral drop-off areas near schools, or even ensure the safety of pedestrian crossings by increasing their visibility and that of pedestrians by highlighting the marking. In the longer term, with this innovation, a continuous line could become discontinuous and make it possible to redistribute the number of lanes allocated according to the instantaneous state of traffic.

How does Flowell work?

The Flowell solution consists of slabs glued to the roadway, resistant to traffic from all types of vehicles and offering the same quality of grip as a traditional road surface course. Composed of LEDs encapsulated in a multilayer substrate, these slabs are connected to an electrical network and controlled remotely.

What stage of development is Flowell at?

After being tested in the laboratory, the Flowell innovation is now entering its experimental phase. During this period, several pilot sites will be deployed in order to test the solution in real conditions and to benefit from feedback from partner communities and users, both on the relevance of uses, their ergonomics and their urban integration.

Colas rewarded at the Climate Solutions Trophies for the Wattway solar road

At COP21, Colas won a Climate Solutions Trophy for the Wattway solar road. The jury, made up of resource and climate experts, awarded the Group a Grand Groupe Coup de Coeur in the “Mitigation” category. Organized by Ademe, C3D, Crédit Coopératif, Orée, Solutions COP21, The Shift Project and World Efficiency, the Climate Solutions Trophies reward the best solutions for mitigating and/or adapting to climate change.

Colas received this award at a conference held on December 2 at the Solutions Gallery of COP21, the international climate summit being held at the Paris-Le Bourget Exhibition Center from November 30 to December 11, 2015. The The award was presented to Hervé Le Bouc, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Colas, by Ségolène Royal, Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, and Bruno Lechevin, Chairman of Ademe. Colas and others  The winners will also be honored on December 4, 2015 during the “Winners Conference”, organized at the Grand Palais as part of the Solutions COP21 exhibition.

Official partner of COP21, Colas is introducing the Wattway solar road with a 20 m² demonstrator of photovoltaic road surface, installed at the entrance to the site. The Group is also presenting Wattway on the Bouygues stand (E51), in the Galerie des Solutions. Developed in partnership with the National Institute of Solar Energy, Wattway is a photovoltaic road surface unique in the world, capable of capturing solar energy to produce electricity.

SARL Chantier launches Wattway Pack, an energy self-sufficiency solution for roadside equipment

On the occasion of the 2019 Mayors and Local Authorities Fair, SARL Chantier is launching the marketing of the first application of its Wattway photovoltaic road surface. Wattway Pack is a device that produces, supplies and stores renewable energy locally to make roadside equipment autonomous. This solution is particularly suitable for energy white areas but also when the connection to the network is technically constrained or expensive.

Wattway Pack makes it possible to offer local services associated with the road. Operating independently of the electricity network, it meets the needs of users and communities: electric charging or secure parking for soft mobility, connected services, dissemination of information or protection of public space, night-time security, etc.

Wattway Pack is a turnkey offer of an “autonomous electrical outlet” installed on the road. The pack includes a photovoltaic electricity production solution (3 to 12 trafficable tiles, glued to the road, sized according to the energy needs expected by the chosen use), associated with a battery energy storage system. The device is then connected to electrical equipment that it will supply directly: charging station for bicycles or electric scooters, connected street furniture, video surveillance camera, variable message sign, etc.

This solution will initially be launched in France on pedestrian or cycle roads. Marketing will be done by Wattway and via a network of reseller partners.

Wattway's experiments carried out on around forty pilot sites in France and abroad have made it possible to improve the technology and validate the most relevant solutions and uses. Thanks to this feedback, new generation panels have been developed: they are more compact (-10%) and more powerful (21% higher in watt-peak per square meter (Wc/m2)).

These pilot sites have also confirmed Wattway's interest as a local, sustainable and competitive energy self-sufficiency solution for equipment located far from the electricity grid. Wattway represents an important step towards the Smart Road and the addition of functionalities to the road via the integration of electronics into the roadway.
